Percent deviation of spot from the max-pain strike: (spot − max_pain) / max_pain. Negative = spot below the magnet (upward pull into expiry), positive = spot above it (downward pull).
Calculation
(spot − max_pain_strike) / max_pain_strike × 100 for the nearest upcoming expiry.
