BNB Chain has grown over the past year. In September 2026 it processed an average of 17.3 million transactions a day, against 13.6 million a year earlier. A new block arrives every 0.45 seconds.
Its token, BNB, closed at $1,307 on 8 October 2025, its highest ever. On 4 October 2026 it stood at $795, 39 percent lower. Over twelve months BNB lost 30.9 percent. Bitcoin lost 29.3 percent over the same period.
A busier chain and a token that moves like Bitcoin: so what are you buying when you buy BNB? This piece goes through it in order: what the chain does, who uses it, how the supply shrinks, and what the price has actually reacted to.
BNB Chain is fast because few run it
BNB Smart Chain is a blockchain that runs the same programs as Ethereum. An app built for Ethereum can launch there almost unchanged, just cheaper. A transaction cost about 3.5 cents on average in August 2026.
What makes that possible is a small number of large validators. According to the documentation, 45 are active each day, and 21 of them produce blocks in each epoch. Becoming a validator requires staking at least 2,000 BNB of your own, about $1.6 million at the 4 October price. Since the Fermi upgrade in January 2026 a block arrives every 0.45 seconds; a measurement over 200,000 blocks gave 0.4501 seconds.
BNB Chain is fast and cheap because it trusts its security to a few large operators.
What do you need the BNB token for there?
BNB has two jobs: fees on the chain, a discount voucher at Binance
On the chain, BNB pays the fees, the way ether does on Ethereum.
The second job sits with the Binance exchange, for which BNB was created as an exchange token in 2017. Paying trading fees on Binance in BNB gives a 25 percent discount. Holding BNB in Binance's savings product Simple Earn earns the so-called HODLer Airdrops, new tokens Binance hands out before listing them. Both exist only on Binance and only with a verified account.
One of BNB's two jobs does not happen on the blockchain but at an exchange.
And the chain itself: who uses it, and for what?
The chain mostly moves stablecoins and memecoins
According to BscScan, daily transactions over a 30-day average rose from 13.6 million (September 2025) to 17.3 million (September 2026). The number of addresses ever used rose 42 percent in twelve months, to 922.5 million.
The money tells a different story. According to DefiLlama:
| early October 2025 | early October 2026 | |
|---|---|---|
| Decentralised exchange volume, 30 days | $99.8bn | $34.3bn |
| Locked in DeFi applications | $8.48bn | $5.84bn |
| Stablecoins on the chain | $14.17bn | $16.93bn |
Trading volume peaked in October 2025 at $127 billion, carried by a memecoin wave. The memecoin platform four.meme took in $44 million in fees back then, and $0.3 million in August 2026. What grew were stablecoins: mostly Tether, plus fund shares such as Circle's USYC and BlackRock's BUIDL.
In August 2026 all users of the chain together paid $18.4 million in fees.
The chain is being used. It is just that most of the money flowing through it is not BNB.
Does any of that growth still reach the token, for example through the burn?
The burn follows the calendar, not usage
BNB has a fixed target: the supply is meant to fall from 133.2 million today to 100 million. To get there, BNB is burned, in two ways.
The larger is the quarterly Auto-Burn. The last four destroyed about 6 million BNB together, a little over 4 percent of supply:
| Burn | Date | BNB |
|---|---|---|
| 33rd | 27 Oct 2025 | 1,441,281 |
| 34th | 15 Jan 2026 | 1,371,804 |
| 35th | 15 Apr 2026 | 1,569,307 |
| 36th | 15 Jul 2026 | 1,615,828 |
How much is burned is set by a published formula. It depends on the number of blocks in the quarter and on the average price: the higher the price, the fewer BNB. Recalculating the last four burns shows that the amount depends practically only on time and price. How many transactions sit inside the blocks does not enter.
The second way does depend on usage: a tenth of every fee on the chain is burned immediately. That comes to about 5,000 BNB a quarter, roughly 0.3 percent of what the Auto-Burn destroys.
Whether the chain gets busier or quieter barely changes the burn.
So what does the price react to?
When Binance takes a hit, so does BNB
Binance is the largest crypto exchange, with about a third of global spot and derivatives trading (CoinGlass, Q1 2026). Since 2023 it has been directly the subject of legal news on six days. Binance closing prices, change from the previous day and over 30 days:
| Event | Date | BNB | BTC | BNB 30 days | BTC 30 days |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Regulator CFTC sues Binance | 27 Mar 2023 | −5.5 % | −3.0 % | +3.0 % | +1.2 % |
| SEC sues Binance | 5 Jun 2023 | −9.2 % | −5.1 % | −20.5 % | +13.5 % |
| Settlement with the US Justice Department, $4.3bn | 21 Nov 2023 | −10.9 % | −4.6 % | +2.8 % | +16.6 % |
| Sentencing of founder Changpeng Zhao | 30 Apr 2024 | −2.4 % | −5.0 % | +0.5 % | +5.9 % |
| SEC drops its case | 29 May 2025 | −1.7 % | −2.0 % | −6.0 % | −0.7 % |
| Zhao's pardon announced | 23 Oct 2025 | +5.1 % | +2.3 % | −22.5 % | −20.9 % |
On the three days with unexpectedly bad news, BNB fell about twice as much as Bitcoin. A month after the SEC lawsuit BNB was 20.5 percent lower and Bitcoin 13.5 percent higher. Zhao's sentence and the end of the SEC case were expected and barely moved BNB. The pardon lifted BNB more than Bitcoin for a day; after that both fell alike.
Six days is not much, which is why they are listed one by one. The three unexpected pieces of bad news point the same way.
BNB reacts more strongly to news about Binance than to news about the chain.
And away from those days, month by month?
Since 2023 BNB has moved like a damped Bitcoin
Monthly returns in US dollars from Binance monthly candles, January 2018 to September 2026. Correlation measures how closely the two move month by month: 1 means lockstep, 0 means no link.

Until 2022 BNB was an asset of its own, and a wild one: in February 2021 alone it rose 374 percent. Since 2023 it has swung as much as Bitcoin and moved more closely with it. When Bitcoin falls, BNB usually falls less, a median of 4.7 against 7.1 percent. When Bitcoin rises, BNB usually rises less, a median of 5.3 against 10.2 percent.
| Year | BNB | BTC |

| 2018 | −28.4 % | −73.0 % |
| 2019 | +124.4 % | +94.3 % |
| 2020 | +172.4 % | +302.0 % |

The pattern: claims about the chain mostly hold. Claims about big new buyers of the token hold less often.
The obvious objection
"BNB Chain is one of the most used blockchains. That has to show in the price eventually."
Over the past twelve months it did not. Transactions rose 27 percent, and BNB fell as much as Bitcoin. The mechanism that could turn usage into scarcity, the fee burn, destroys 0.3 percent of what the Auto-Burn destroys. A busy chain is good news for its users. For the token it has so far been almost none.
What this means for you
If you buy BNB because BNB Chain is growing: that growth barely reaches the token. Usage shows up in stablecoins and in fees of $18 million a month, not in the burn and not in the price against Bitcoin.
If you buy BNB because you use Binance: that is where the token makes the most sense for you, with the discount and the airdrops. It is also where it is most tied to the exchange. News about Binance has moved BNB more than anything that happened on the chain.
Buying BNB is, above all, a bet on Binance.
Three numbers show whether that changes: Binance's share of trading (about a third today), the size of the next Auto-Burn in mid-October, and the fee burn's share of it. What remains open is whether the chain will ever generate enough fees for its burn to matter next to the Auto-Burn.
FAQ
How are the monthly returns calculated? Month-end close against the previous month-end close, BNB and BTC each against USDT on Binance, without fees. The first trading month, December 2017, is left out. October 2026 is still running and is left out of all comparisons.
How does the Auto-Burn formula work? According to the official site bnbburn.info, the amount comes from the number of blocks in the quarter and the average BNB price. The higher the price, the fewer BNB are burned. The number of transactions does not appear in the formula.
Wasn't the SEC case against Binance dropped? Yes, with finality on 29 May 2025. The November 2023 settlement with the US Justice Department, with a $4.3 billion penalty, stands. Changpeng Zhao served four months in prison and was pardoned in October 2025.
